The South Western Motorway is a privately funded urban motorway in Sydney's south west to the east of the Australian state of New South Wales. It connects the General Holmes Drive in Kyeemagh ( Sydney ) with the South Western Freeway, the Hume Highway and the Westlink in Casula ( Sydney ). The road was opened to traffic in August 1992 and, together with the South Western Freeway publicly funded the Metroad 5

History

South Western Motorway

The South Western Motorway replaced the old Hume Highway from Liverpool to Sydney. In the 1980s, the Hume Highway ( N31 ) ended in Crossroads, short of Liverpool. The section of line from Campbelltown to Crossroads was formerly known as South Western Freeway and was reported as a Freeway Corridor F5.

Since then, either you get on the Liverpool Road (S31 ) or the Newbridge Road ( S54) via Bankstown to Sydney city center without paying toll. Both, however, alternative routes have many traffic lights and are often heavily congested.

A first route section emerged in the mid -1980s as a connection of the Heathcote Road, Moorebank with the Hume Highway at Casula, including a bridge over the Georges River at Casula. This road was indeed dual carriageway freeway with almost standard, built, but had a traffic light controlled junction with the Moorebank Avenue.

After years of proposals and political Versprechnungen was a privately funded and operated urban motorway - the South Western Motorway - built as operator model. The new road was built on public land of the freeway corridor between the F5 Heathcote Road, Moorebank and King Georges Road in Beverly Hills. It was in August 1992, months before the plan goal completed. However, still missing the connection between the Cross Roads and Casula, and a third "highway" there was only a two-lane road between the junction with the Fairford Road and the junction with the King Georges Road.

The South Western Motorway is operated by Interlink Roads and has a toll booth in Hammondville. 2023 will go to the government of New South Wales the road.

East Freeway

1994, the gap between Cross Roads and Casula was finally closed. Nevertheless, the highway ended abruptly at the still King Georges Road and forced the traffic to the center of Sydney so on congested roads. Then they built a publicly funded connection - the East Freeway - between the existing highway at the King Georges Road and General Holmes Drive (Met -1) in Mascot near the airport. Included were two tunnels, only 4 km from Kingsgrove after Arncliffe and once under the Cooks River. Construction began in August 1998 and in December 2001 the East Freeway was opened.

There have been discussions about the impact of freeways on the environment, and in particular parts of the Wolli Creek and the ventilation of tunnels that were not equipped with filters for cost reasons. Since its opening, the East Freeway is subject to criticism because of lack of capacity, because the tunnels have only two lanes for each direction and you have provided no place on which later. Most of congestion problems, there is at the western end of the long main tunnel.

An additional lane for slow traffic exists on the western tunnel entrance on a short distance. Had this lane a few hundred meters further extended into the tunnel, the capacity of the entire tunnel would be far greater. On the steep tunnel entrances it is also common to traffic accidents involving trucks are often involved. The air pollution in the tunnel is a difficult problem. The health authority informed the road authority that the level of air pollution significantly exceeds the tunnel at peak times acceptable levels. The driver must therefore their passage keep the windows closed and set the air to recirculated air.

The construction of the East Freeway and the eastern two-lane section of the South Western Motorway has been expanded to 4 lanes, so has the entire Met -5 Freeway now standard.

The traffic light junction with the Moorebank Avenue remained and made a permanent obstacle to the flow of traffic dar. In 2003, finally, a height- free connection opened on this street. Thus, not only the entire Metroad 5, but also the entire highway from Canberra to Sydney is continuously upgraded to freeway standard.

Westlink (M7 )

With the completion of the Westlink in December 2005 and the expulsion of the distance from the Cumberland Highway are the Westlink as Metroad 7 a connection in Prestons was built, which allows the access from the south in the western part of Sydney or even bypass the whole inner city of Sydney.

Criticism

The South Western Motorway is often closed due to accidents and the computer crashes in the East Tunnel, which has led to considerable resentment among motorists in Sydney. Between 2002 and 2008 alone, there were six closures, which were due to technical or computer difficulties in the tunnel.

Pay the government of New South Wales incurs penalties to the operators of the South Western Motorway, because more traffic is running as originally planned on this route. By 2011, these penalties AU $ reached 13 million, the additional costs in question was caused by the state's discount system for users of the South Western Motorway.
