Ma Sicong

Sitson Ma (Chinese马思聪/马思聪, Pinyin Mǎ Sicong, born May 7, 1912, in Haifeng, Guangdong, † 1987 in the United States) was a Chinese violin virtuoso and composer.

Sitson Ma studied at the Conservatory of Nancy and took violin lessons in Paris. In 1931 he returned to China, where he worked as a violinist and in Guangzhou founded a music school. In 1937 he became a professor at the University of Canton. After the Second World War, he was a music teacher and conductor in Shanghai, Taipei, Tianjin and Beijing. In the aftermath of the Cultural Revolution, he emigrated in 1967 in the United States.

He composed two symphonies and a symphonic poem, a violin concerto, chamber works, including a Mongolian, and a Tibetan Suite for piano and violin, three cantatas, folk songs for choir a cappella and several song cycles.
