MAA-1 Piranha

The MAA -1 Piranha ( MISSIL Ar -Ar 1 ) is the first developed by Brazil on its own air - to-air missile. It is used by the Brazilian Air Force and Navy.

The first studies were created in the late 1970s, but only in the mid -1990s began to develop at the company Mectron. The MAA -1 has an infrared seeker head, which is supplied by the South African company Denel, as well as a solid rocket motor. From the outside it looks the Python III are very similar. The piranha is a short-range rocket with fire-and -forget capability. It can be used by the AT -26 Xavante, F -5, Dassault Mirage III and AMX.

In March 2007, Denel and the Brazilian Air Force signed a contract in which the MAA -1 is from 2015, replaced by the A- Darter and both parties share the development costs.
