Description

The Asian Yellow Wood is a sparingly branched, deciduous tree which reaches a height of 10 to 15 meters and a diameter at breast height of 60 centimeters. The bark is green brown and scaly. The branches are covered with violet-brown and Korkporen. Young twigs are hairy, older branches and buds are bald.

The leaves are 15 to 23 inches long and are available in seven to eleven elliptic to oblong - ovate leaflets divided. The leaves are 3.5 to 7 (rarely to 9.7 ) inches long and 2 to 3.5 (rarely to 5) centimeters wide, short acuminate, rounded at the base and bare. They sit at 3-6 millimeters long stems.

Flowers and Fruit

The flowers are dull white and arranged in 10 to 20 centimeters long, upright racemes, which are combined to total panicle inflorescences. The main axis of the inflorescence is densely brown hairy. Bloom time is from July to August. The individual flowers are about 8 to 12 millimeters long and sit on 4-6 mm long pedicles, maximum values ​​ranging from 3.2 to 10 millimeters. The calyx is bell-shaped and 2-4 millimeters long and short toothed and densely hairy yellow-brown. The crown is white, 7 to 11 millimeters in size. The ovary is straight and also densely tawny pubescent. As fruits 3-7 inches long and 1 to 1.2 inches wide sleeves are formed with one to four yellow -brown to brown, elliptical seeds 6-8 mm in length. The fruits ripen from September to October.

Distribution and habitat requirements

The species is Russia (mainly the Amur region ), China, Taiwan, the Korean peninsula spread to the Japanese islands.

The Asian yellow wood grows as a woody steppe and dry forests on hills from 300 to 900 meters. It prefers moderately dry to fresh, nutrient-rich, slightly acidic to alkaline, sandy loamy to loamy soils. The species thrives in sunny locations, warm temperatures but usually frost hardy.

The Asian Yellow wood is a species of the genus Maackia. A synonym of the species is Cladrastis amurensis. There are two varieties:

  • Maackia amurensis var amurensis: nominate
  • Maackia amurensis var buergeri: The leaflets are blunt and not pointed as in the nominate and hairy on the underside of leaves. The variety occurs naturally in Japan.
