Mabel Lang

Mabel Louise Lang ( born November 12, 1917 in Utica, New York, † July 21, 2010 in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania) was an American Classical philologist, Althistorikerin and classical archaeologist.

Long grew up in Hamilton (New York). She earned a bachelor's degree in 1939 from Cornell University, in 1940 a master's degree at Bryn Mawr College, where she earned her Doctorate degree in 1943. In the same year she started her career in teaching at Bryn Mawr College, where she since 1971 Professor of Ancient Greek (Paul Shorey Professor of Greek) was. Their interests were of Greek history and epigraphy. She stepped retired in 1988.

As a research assistant at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, she participated in excavations on the Acropolis and the Agora. In the 1950s and 60s she was on excavations at Gordion, Turkey, and the Palace of Nestor, Mycenaean Pylos, involved near the modern town of Pylos.

Honors and Awards

Lang has been awarded honorary doctorates from the College of the Holy Cross (1975 ), Colgate University (1978 ) and the Hamilton Collge (1989). She was a member of the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the German Archaeological Institute.
