Maceration (bone)

Mazerationspräparate (from the Latin macerare " soak "), even skeletal specimens, and only skeleton, are the bones of a biological object, or parts thereof, dar.

Method

All procedures start with the gutting and rough fleshing, that is, removing all skin, fat, muscle and connective tissue components of the preparation.

In the maceration several methods are available:

  • The Kaltwassermazeration ( rot) is done in cold water and is the most gentle, but also most time-consuming method; the odor is extreme.
  • The Warmwassermazeration at 30-40 ° C is faster and the smell of decay can be reduced by the addition of soda.
  • Enzymatic methods make use of the resolution of organic material by enzymes such as trypsin, papain, pepsin, Biozym SE (a combination of amylase and protease) and various detergents. This is the preferred form of maceration, since enzymes are mostly specialized to only one substance and only attack them. They also provide a cost effective and productive way of bone preparation, as the maceration can be partly completed in a mere 30 minutes and the enzymes are cheap.
  • Chemical methods use the resolution by chemical substances such as ammonia, soda, potash and soda, etc. The major drawback to enzymes is that the chemicals do not distinguish between different substances, but attack anything they can decompose, so also the preparation.
  • Biological processes use microorganisms (eg fly maggots, skin beetles ) to eliminate adhering muscle tissue. This is especially suitable for very delicate skeletons that would quickly attacked by chemical substances. Leaving small skeletons but too long in insects, it is possible that they also erode the fine bone structures

In recent literature microorganisms are no longer associated with maceration, as they dissolve any substance, but represented by the clean eroding the bone "just" a perfect form of fleshing. Usually, the bones are then macerated enzymatically to clean the fine pores and bone to emulsify the fat contained in the bone.

After that, they bleached, dried and degreased. Multipart products can then be mounted or using stainless steel wire and screws.
