Maciej Giertych

Maciej Marian Giertych ( born March 24, 1936 in Warsaw) is a Polish forest scientists and politicians of the right-wing party League of Polish Families (Liga Polskich Rodzin ) and from 2004 to 2009, non-attached member of the European Parliament.

Life and work

Maciej Giertych studied at Oxford. After graduating in 1958 he worked at the University of Toronto where he acquired in 1962 with the dissertation Endogenous changes in growth regulators in relation to growth and development of red pine a doctorate degree. Back in Poland, he worked at the Institute of Dendrology of the Academy of Sciences in Kórnik. At the Agricultural University of Poznan, he obtained his habilitation in 1970 and in 1981 became an associate in 1989 full professor. Through his scientific work brought him international renown and from 1986 to 1995, representatives of Poland in the International Council of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations ( IUFRO ). For special services he received from the IUFRO also an award.

His political career began Giertych with the political changes in Poland. From 1990 to 2002 he was chairman of the board of directors of the National Party ( Stronnictwo Narodowe ). From 2001 Giertych was Polish in the political council of the League families whose deputy he is chairman.

From 2001 to 2004 he was a member of the Sejm and here Member of the Committee for Environmental Protection, Natural Resources and Forestry and the Committee on Foreign Affairs. From 2003 he worked as an observer in the European Parliament, and has since Poland joined the European Union ordinary MPs. Giertych was admitted as the presidential election in the fall of 2005, but withdrew his candidacy before the first ballot.

A stir Giertych made ​​in the European Parliament with a brochure anti-Semitic content, which he distributed among other things there myself. Maciej Giertychs son and party colleague Roman Giertych, who was from 2006 to 2007 briefly Polish Minister of Education. His brother is Wojciech Giertych.
