Macintosh Application Environment

The Macintosh Application Environment (MAE ) was a software package, which was released in 1994 by Apple Computer to run on selected Unix computers Apple Macintosh programs.

MAE used the X Window System version X11 R5, a fully simulated Macintosh computers with 68k processor ( exactly: Motorola 68040LC ) to provide for the execution of MacOS programs. Version 2.0 was based on System 7.1, the last version, MAE 3.0, was compatible with System 7.5.3. The emulator ran into a single X11 window, ie there was no possibility of individual MacOS window display in single X11 windows ( " seamless ").

To exchange data between the emulator ( MAE ) and the host system (X11) were ( virtual ) network shared file systems and the clipboard to choose from. Printer output ( on PostScript printers), sound and graphics output QuickTime supported. Access to floppy disks and CD -ROMs was the emulated MacOS possible.

According to " MAE 3.0 White Paper" uses the underlying 68k emulator dynamic compilation.

On 14 May 1998, the program was discontinued.
