Mackem

A Mackem (also Makem, Mak'em ) is a native of Sunderland in North East England. Even the local Sunderland dialect is so named.

The term was introduced by sailors in the 19th century in Newcastle, but found only in the late 1980s and early 1990s widespread. He comes from the expression "we mak ' em, you tak' em", which refers to the built in Sunderland ships; there are now at Sunderland, however, no more shipbuilding industry. The spelling of " mak " expresses that the high English diphthong in "make" in Northern English dialects is a monophthong.
