Macrocytosis
As macrocytosis ( macros, Greek for large ) is called in medicine the occurrence of abnormally large red blood cells ( macrocytes ) that show up after a blood in the blood and whose mean corpuscular volume (MCV ) compared to the normal case to more than 98 fL (fl ) is increased. N If an anemia is, it is called a macrocytic anemia.
A macrocytosis is observed, among other things:
- During treatment of deficiency anemia (regenerative )
- In cirrhosis,
- In alcoholism up to four months after the end of alcohol consumption and
- With vitamin B12 or folate deficiency.
In animals and myeloproliferative diseases and feline leukemia can be responsible for a macrocytosis. In puppies macrocytosis in the first days of life is physiological.
As an artifact can arise macrocytosis with outdated or damaged samples.
