Macroom

Macroom ( Irish: Maigh Chromtha ) is a town in County Cork in the southwest of Ireland. The Irish name Maigh Chromtha possibly has the meaning " hump-backed level," but can also refer to Crom Cruach, a pre-Christian Irish deity.

Macroom is situated on the N22 between Cork City and Killarney in a valley on the River Sullane, a tributary of the River Lee. From Killarney in a northwesterly direction Macroom 48 miles from Cork City in an easterly direction 38 km. With Cork City is an hourly bus service every working day. On the rail transport in Ireland, the place is no longer connected; to Cork Airport, the distance is about 45 km.

The population Macrooms amounted during Census 2002 to 2,985 persons. A major source of income is tourism; in Knocknakilla, between Macroom and Millstreet few kilometers further north, there is, for example, a 3500 years old megalithic complex.

In 1650, the Battle of Macroom took place near the village.
