Maeve Binchy

Maeve Binchy (born 28 May 1940 Dalkey Dun Laoghaire in today's County - Rathdown, † 30 July 2012 in Dublin) was an Irish writer and columnist for the newspaper "The Irish Times ".

Life

Binchy studied at University College Dublin and subsequently worked as a teacher before she eventually became a columnist at the Irish Times and later a writer.

Her novels are frequently based in Ireland and describe the tensions between urban and rural life, the contrasts between England and Ireland, and the dramatic changes that went through her ​​home country since the Second World War.

In the UK and the U.S. Binchy is one of the best-selling authors. Her books have sold over 40 million copies to date.

Binchy lived a long time with her ​​husband, the children's author Gordon Snell, in Dublin and London, but then returned back to Dalkey.

In recognition of her life's work Binchy was awarded as part of the Irish Book Award 2010 with the Lifetime Achievement Award; another Irish Book Award she received posthumously in 2012 for A Week in Winter.

Maeve Binchy died July 30, 2012 after a short illness at the age of 72 years in Dublin.
