Magda Aelvoet

Magdalena " Magda " Godelieve Hilda Aelvoet ( born April 4, 1944 in Steenokkerzeel, Flemish Brabant, Belgium) is a former Belgian politician of Agalev.

Biography

After school she studied German and acquired the academic degree Candidat. Another Study of Political and Social Science at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, she finished with a licentiate.

Her political career began in 1985 as a candidate of the ecological party Agalev with the election for Senator. After six years of membership in the Senate it from 1991 to 1995 Member of the Chamber of Deputies. In 1994 she was elected a member of the 4th European Parliament and belonged to this until 1999.

For their political merits, particularly in the fourth Belgian state reform in 1993, her the honorific title of Minister of State was on 30 January 1995 awarded and thus membership of the Privy Council.

After her resignation from the European Parliament she was appointed by Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt in the multi-party coalition government in July 1999 and took in its first cabinet offices of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Consumer Protection, Public Health and Environment. In protest against Belgian arms supplies to Nepal she appeared on 28 August 2002 in advance of these posts back and was replaced by her party colleague Jef Tavernier.

In the parliamentary elections in May 2003, in which the Agalev has experienced dramatic loss of votes, they suffered a defeat, scoring no mandate in the Chamber of Deputies. In the following years she was a member of the municipal council of lions and retired in September 2008 finally from political life back.
