Maglić, Serbia

Maglić ( Serbian Cyrillic Маглић ) or Backi Maglić ( Serbian Cyrillic Бачки Маглић ), German Bulkes, Hungarian Bulkesz, is a town of Petrovac municipality, which is situated in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, in the Republic of Serbia.

History

The village was built under the name Bulkes 1786 in the Pannonian plain between the Danube and Tisza by German settlers. 1944 to 1945 the German population was expelled and interned. In May 1945 4650 Greeks settled in Bulkes by the Yugoslav government. The final settlement of the village began in late 1949 and ended around 1953. The new settlers, mainly Serbs, came in several waves from all over Yugoslavia. 1949 Bulkes was renamed Maglić.

Home committee

In the early 1950s a so-called homeland Committee, a kind of council, was launched for the Bulkes. The first task was the recovery of scattered across the globe Bulkes and the organization of home meeting.
