Bromide is a chemical compound of magnesium selected from the group of the bromides with the formula MgBr2.
Occurrence
Magnesium bromide occurs naturally in overburden salts of Kalisalzlagerstätten ( bromides come in potash salts at a ratio of 1:300 to the analogous chlorides ago) and sea water ( at a concentration of about 70 g / m³) before.
Production and representation
There are several possibilities for the production of magnesium bromide. For a magnesium bromide may be obtained by reaction of a magnesium hydroxide with hydrogen bromide ( obtained from magnesium chloride ).
A further possibility is given by the representations of the elements. This reaction is carried out in anhydrous diethyl ether as the direct dropping elemental bromine would cause of metallic magnesium to a violent reaction.
Properties
Magnesium bromide is a colorless, hygroscopic powder and also occurs as hexahydrate, which is dehydrated at 165 ° C to anhydrous magnesium bromide. It crystallizes in the cadmium iodide structure.
Use
Magnesium bromide may be used for the production of bromine from bromide-containing bases.
It is also used in organic syntheses.
