Magnesium nitrate is the magnesium salt of nitric acid, and has the molecular formula Mg ( NO3 ) 2 It has the UN number 1474 and the danger Number 50 ( Oxidizing (fire -intensifying) effect). It is used as a fertilizer, magnesium nitrate hexahydrate may be used as a latent heat storage. Further, it is a bauschädliches salt and is used in the dewatering of nitric acid (see also nitrates).
Production
Magnesium nitrate in ethyl acetate can be obtained by reaction of magnesium with nitrogen tetroxide.
Magnesium nitrate is produced by the neutralization of magnesium hydroxide and nitric acid ( see also titration, Synthesis (Chemistry) ).
