Magnus Cathedral

The Kirkjubømúrurin or only Múrurin ( Faroese for "the wall " ) of about 1300 is the ruins of the Cathedral Magnus ( Magnus Cathedral, Faroese Magnuskatedralurin ) in Kirkjubøur on the Faroe Islands. He is on the waiting list for UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the most important medieval building in the Faroe Islands.

History

The High Gothic Cathedral ruins has neither roof nor windows, and it is unclear whether the Magnusdom was ever completed and put into operation. It is 25.5 m long, 10.8 m wide and 9 m high. A church tower in vain, but there are recognizable approaches that he had planned. The approximately 1.5 m thick walls are made of local basalt.

Construction has begun around 1300 under the resident Bishop Erlendur here, which also includes the sheep letter is attributed. Erlendur was not least because of the significant Faroese bishop in medieval times. However, he soon had to flee out of the Faroe Islands because he demanded too high taxes of the population and it probably was an uprising. Maybe that is the reason for the incomplete state. Another theory suggests that the Black Death is to blame, the Faroe Islands 1349/1350 devastated and reduced to a third of the population.

Is found on the north side an attachment, which is believed generally that at least he was covered, and maybe there are also services were held. However ( and are ) there were in the immediate vicinity of the Ólavskirkjan, the oldest still operating church of the Faroe Islands. However, this roof of cultivation to have been destroyed by an avalanche in 1772 again.

Is dedicated to the Cathedral of the Holy Magnus, the Jarl of the Orkneys, and the Holy Bishop Thorlákur Þórhallsson of Skálholt. Both were found in 1905 relics ( bones ). Furthermore, they found a splitter, which seems to originate from the cross of Christ, and a piece of cloth, which was attributed to a robe of the Virgin Mary.

On the inside of the ruins, there were 12 carved Weihkreuze, 6 of which are still present, while another in the neighboring King Farm and another is in the Danish National Museum.

Because of the harsh Faroese weather with frequent rain and storm the ruin was increasingly attacked over the centuries. Therefore, it is currently being renovated from the ground up, and you think about it, to seal it completely with a glass of house.
