Mahmoud Fawzi

Mahmoud Fawzi (Arabic: محمود فوزي Mahmud Fauzi; born September 18, 1900 in Cairo, † June 12, 1981 ) was an Egyptian diplomat and politician.

Life

Fauzi studied law at Cairo University. From 1926, he held many positions in the diplomatic service. In 1942 he was appointed to the Egyptian Consul General in Jerusalem. Fauzi 1947 Egyptian representative at the United Nations in 1952 and ambassador to Great Britain. He was Secretary of State under President Ali Muhammad Naguib and Gamal Abdel Nasser the end of 1952.

Until the formation of the United Arab Republic, a union between Egypt and Syria, 1958, he was Secretary of State. From this time he served as foreign minister of the United Arab Republic broke up this 1961. Then he was again foreign minister of Egypt.

After Nasser's death in 1970 he was appointed by his successor, Anwar Sadat Prime Minister. Fauzi held this office until January 1972 and then took hold the office of Vice President until his retirement from politics in 1974 was. Fauzi has also been called the "father of Egyptian diplomacy."
