Maiella

The Maiella Mountains

The Majella is a mountain massif in the Abruzzo region in the central Italy. It lies on the border between the provinces of Chieti, Pescara and L' Aquila. Their highest peak, Mount Amaro, with 2793 m the second highest peak of the Apennines, and was first climbed in 1873. Other related peaks are Monte Acquaviva ( 2737 m), Monte Focalone ( 2676 m), Monte Rotondo ( 2656 m), Monte Macellaro ( 2646m ), Pesco Falcone ( 2546 m), Cima delle Murelle ( 2598 m). Adjacent are the mountain ranges of Mount Morrone, Porrara Monte and Monte Pizzi.

The mountain range forms the center of the Maiella National Park. It contains high levels of up to 2500 m altitude, deep valleys and gorges dug by rivers such as the Orfento, the Foro and others. The ice waterfall Il Principi Ante at 1600 m altitude plunges 25 meters.
