Maine Eastern Railroad

The Maine Eastern Railroad ( MERR ) is a local railway company in Maine (United States). Headquartered in Rockland. The Company operates freight and passenger traffic in the summer on the railway line Brunswick- Rockland ( 92 km). In addition, the company is running on the railway route Brunswick East Augusta ( 54 km), on which, however, takes place only freight. The railway tracks are owned by the state of Maine and were leased by the Maine Eastern. In Brunswick and East Augusta is connected to the rail network of the Pan Am Railways.

The company was founded on 1 November 2003 as a subsidiary of New Jersey-based railway company Morristown and Erie Railway. She took over the operation tasks that the Maine Coast Railroad had to give up in 2000. The scheduled passenger services between Brunswick and Rockland is only from Wednesday to Sunday from late May to late October. From late May to late June the trains run only on weekends. Wednesdays to Saturdays ride each way two trains on Sundays is a train in each direction. Also ply special trains for various occasions. The passenger train set is based in Rockland.

The railway company has six diesel locomotives: from the Morristown & Erie took over two EMD FL9 (No. 488 and 489 ) and a MLW C420 (No. 4223 ), by the Canadian National Railway, the MLW M420W (No. 3573 ) and by Amtrak two EMD F40PH -2 (No. 256 and 291 ). Most of the locomotives are 488 and 489, as a rule, used in double traction for passenger train service.
