Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum ( Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Maine) is a railway museum in Portland (Maine). In 1993, one the " Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Museum ," after the Edaville Railroad, a heritage railway in Massachusetts, in 1991 had to be shut down due to financial problems. The vehicles of this railway, which mostly came from the former narrow gauge operations in Maine were transferred in September 1993 to Portland. The museum is located on Casco Bay on the site of the Portland Company, which also had some of the narrow-gauge locomotives that were used in Maine built. It also features an approximately 2.5 kilometer railway track in the track width of 610 millimeters ( 2 feet). The single-track museum route runs along the coast parallel to the pedestrian promenade.

Periodically the museum lends its collection vehicles for short-term exhibitions. So went the Lok 3 of the Monson Railroad in 1997 on the occasion of the 175 - year celebration at the station in Monson and 2001 on the 200 - year celebration in Strongsville. Also at the Museum of the Wiscasset, Waterville and Farmington Railroad this locomotive was temporarily awarded. The railcar of Bridgton and Saco River Railroad was issued to an Independence Day celebration in Bridgton and used in Phillips at the local museum route. More vehicles from the museum are the locomotives 7 and 8 of the Bridgton & Saco River, the locomotive 4 of the Monson Railroad and converted from a passenger railcar of the former Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad.

The contract for the free use of the museum building will expire on 30 September 2007. The owner has announced that it will require an annual rent of $ 65,000 from October. It is not yet clear whether and how the museum can continue to exist permanently in these circumstances. In May 2012, it was announced that it is seeking a move to Gray north of Portland and wanted to build a museum route on the route of the former Portland - Lewiston Interurban Railroad.
