Máirtín Ó Direáin

Máirtín Ó Direáin [ mɑ ː r ʲ t ʲ i ː ɲ o ː d ʲ ir ʲ ɑ ː ɲ ], Martin O'Direan (Anglicised ) (* 1910 in Fearann to Choirce on the island of Inis Mór, † 1988 in Dublin) was an Irish poet.

Life

Máirtín Ó Direáin, son of a small farmer, grew up on the island of Inishmore of the Aran Islands. Up to the age of 16, he spoke only Irish. After leaving school he worked from 1928 for several years as a clerk in the General Post Office of Galway. He also served for a while as secretary for the Gaelic League worked, which has set itself the promotion of the Irish language to the target. In 1938 he moved to Dublin, where he worked in the civil service, most of the time in the Ministry of Education. He spent his retirement years.

Work

Ó Direáin wrote poems mainly and exclusively in the Irish language. While this made him an outstanding representative of Irish literature, however, he remained largely unknown outside of Ireland. Already in his time in Galway, he played on the Irish-speaking Taibhdhearc Theatre. His first collection of poems, Coinnle Geala (Eng. " Burning Candles " ), appeared in 1942. A year later, Danta Aniar, (Eng. "Poems from the West "). Both publications were made at his own expense. Until the 80s was followed by other books of poetry and the autobiographical Feamainn Bhealtaine (1961, dt "May seaweed ").

His work is mainly characterized by the tensions between town and country and between tradition and modernity. He is in the Irish literary criticism today as one of those Irish-language poet, who led the Irish poetry strongest in the modern world. He is also very well received in the English literary scene in Ireland. A Biographical Essay from the year 2002 on Máirtín Ó Direáin by Isobel Ní Riain describes Ó Direáins trip in 1938 from his native island in the Irish capital, Dublin, where he spent fifty years of his life.
