Maj Sjöwall

Maj Sjöwall ( born September 25, 1935 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish writer and translator.

She studied graphic arts and journalism, then worked for several newspapers. In 1961 she met her counterpart, Per Wahlöö, with whom she lived from 1963. Both are or were avowed Marxists.

Works

Together with Wahlöö she wrote based on the genre of the detective novel to the hugely successful socially critical novel cycle novel about a crime.

The books of writers Sjöwall / Wahlöö have been translated into various languages ​​and filmed for cinema and television, and worked as a radio plays. They won numerous awards, including the 1971 one Edgar Award for Best Novel category for the novel The Laughing Policeman ( Original: The skrattande polisen; German: terminus for nine ). After the death of Per Wahlöö 1975 Maj Sjöwall wrote only a few crime novels, but could not build on the success of the Martin Beck novels, and now works as a translator for crime fiction.

The person of Commissioner Martin Beck was continued in several television films based on themes by Sjöwall and Wahlöö.
