Maja Ratkje

Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje ( born December 29, 1973 in Trondheim ) is a Norwegian singer, live electronics engineer and composer.

Life and work

Ratkje studied from 1995 to 2000 composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music, among others, Lasse Thoresen, Olav Anton Thommessen and Asbjørn Schaathun. In the summer of 1999, she stayed at IRCAM with Louis Andriessen, Sofia Gubaidulina, Ivar Frounberg, Klaus Huber, Joji Yuasa and Kaija Saariaho.

Ratkje plays theremin, laptop and violin. Together with Hild Sofie Tafjord, Kristin Andersen and Lene Grenager it forms the group Spunk; with Tafjord she made the noise duo Fe -mail ( Syklubb Fra Haelvete, 2002), which applies in the Norwegian scene as " institution " and has been extended with Lotta Melin for Trio agrarian.

Ratkje has composed an opera next, symphonic and chamber music for the film, the theater and the ballet. Her works have been performed among others by the sound Wien, Oslo Sinfonietta, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. She has worked with Jaap Blonk, Lasse Marhaug, Joëlle Léandre, Per Inge Bjørlo, Stephen O'Malley, Ikue Mori and Zeena Parkins. On the Molde International Jazz Festival in 2000, she met in the band jazz chamber on Merzbow. With the group Poing they also interpreted Brecht songs ( on wax, 2011).

Prizes and awards

Ratkje was awarded the International Rostrum of Composers in Paris, the Norwegian Edvard prize ( twice) and 2001 awarded the first composer Arne Nordheim with the price. Her solo album Voice was awarded the Prix Ars Electronica 2003.
