Makhlouf Eldaoudi

Makhlouf Eldaoudi (* 1825 in Marrakech, Morocco, † 1909 in Safed; Hebrew: מכלוף אלדאודי ) was the Hahambaşı, so Turkish Chief Rabbi of the Jewish community of Acre, Haifa, Safed and Tiberias ( 1889-1909 ).

Born in Marrakech, emigrated with his family to Palestine. His father David was descended from the poet Hiyya al - Daudi and belonged to the Jewish elite. Eldaoudi was rabbi during his youth. As an official rabbi, he traveled to many countries, especially since he also spoke several languages. He wrote three religious works which were not published.

In 1889 he was appointed by the authorities to Hahambaşı, with the permission of the Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II. During this time, as Hahambaşı he tried persistently to convert Jews, who have striven to another religion to regain for the Jewish faith. His son Selim ( Salim ) told in retrospect from his memory all unknown episodes after, where his father had participation.

Makhlouf Eldaoudi died in Safed at the age of 83 years.
