Makin (islands)

Makin is a group of islands in the archipelago of the Gilbert Islands in the central Pacific Ocean. Politically, it is part of the island nation of Kiribati. Since the neighboring atoll Butaritari was also formerly called " Makin ', the island group was referred to the distinction as" Little Makin ' ( Makin Meang ).

Geography

Makin lies about 7 km northeast of Butaritari in the north of the Gilbert Islands and thus forms the northernmost land mass. It does not represent the northernmost land mass of Kiribati since Teraina and Tabuaeran are still further north in the Line Islands. Makin consists of two inhabited and four uninhabited islands on a straight-line coral reef that extends with a length of 13 km from north to south. The islands are (from north to south):

All islands together have a land area of 7.86 km ². Makin has 1798 inhabitants (as of 2010), spread over the two places Makin and Kiebu Village. The islands can be reached from the air over the airfield Makin ( ICAO code NGMN, IATA code MTK).
