Madagascar Kingfisher (Alcedo vintsioides )
The Madagascar Kingfisher or Black-billed Kingfisher ( Corythornis vintsioides ) is a Kingfisher species native to Madagascar and the Comoros.
Features
The 13 cm long Madagascar Kingfisher is similar to the European kingfisher. It has a black beak; his legs are red. The crest is green to bluish - black banded, the tops of the wings are dark blue, the throat is white. The chest, the abdomen and wing undersides are light - reddish.
Subspecies
The Madagascar Kingfisher comes in two subspecies:
- A. v. johannae in the Comoros
- A. v. vintsioides in Madagascar
Habitat and food
The Madagascar Kingfisher lives mainly in mangrove areas and feeds on small fish, crustaceans and insects.
