Malaita

Malaita is a 4307 km ² large island of the Pacific island nation of the Solomon Islands.

The elongated island belongs geographically to the island chain of the Solomon Islands. It is located 80 kilometers south of Santa Isabel and 50 kilometers east of Guadalcanal.

With nearly 140,000 inhabitants, is both the main island of Malaita Solomon Islands Malaita Province. Capital of the island is Auki, located on the northwest coast. The highest point is Mount Kalourat with 1,435 m.

The island was in 1568 by the Spanish navigator Alvaro de Mendaña de Neyra, the discovery of the entire islands of the Solomon Islands is attributed discovered.
