Malang

Geographical unit

Malang is the eighth largest city of the Indonesian island of Java. It is located in the eastern part of the island.

Malang is surrounded by the regions Tumpang, Batu, Singosari and doors. At the time of the Asian crisis, the city was largely spared from the impact and was allowed to develop unhindered.

During the Dutch colonial era, and because of its proximity to the port of Surabaya Malang was a popular tourist destination in Indonesia living Europeans.

History

The history of Malang goes back to the 8th century. In the 17th century Malang was first incorporated into the region Mataram and later colonized by the Dutch. 1879 Malang was connected to the network of the railway line from Java, this drove the industrialization progress further. There were also shorter private routes in the surrounding area. The growing population, the government with new problems, the focus was on the question of affordable housing for the population.

Geography

The overall size of Malang is 124.456 km2. In the north of the city adjacent to Pasuruan, to the east and to the west Lumajang Batu. East of the town is an extensive volcanic massif, including with Mount Bromo ( a tourist attraction ) and Mount Semeru, the highest mountain in Java. Both volcanoes are active, ash eruptions of Mount Semeru done several times an hour.

Population

In Malang about 780,000 inhabitants, the population density is 5.000-12.000/km2. The growth rate is 3.9 % per year. In Malang live mostly Javanese and Maduraner, a small percentage form Arabic and Chinese descendants. The largest language group in Malang is the Javanese.

Religion

The majority of the population are Muslims who form a minority Catholics, Hindus and Buddhists.

The University of Brawijaya here has its headquarters

Culture

Malang offers many different tourist attractions. At a traditional dance performances ( wayang ) or proximity to the famous temples of the 13th century.
