Mälaren Valley

The Mälardalen ( Swedish: Mälardalen ) is the valley around the lake Mälaren in Sweden. The term is often used to refer to this part of Sweden, but there is no official definition of the term. The Mälardalen is relatively densely populated with many of the largest cities in Sweden and contains large parts of the historic Swedish heartland Svealand.

Definitions

Usually referred Mälardalen the south-west of Uppland, Västmanland South and North Södermanland. Greater Stockholm is usually also included, sometimes even to the valley Hjalmaren with Orebro.

The biggest cities of the Mälartals are Stockholm, Södertälje, Strängnäs, Eskilstuna, Arboga, Köpings, Västerås and Enköping. Sometimes Uppsala and Örebro be included among them.

The organization Mälardalsrådet, political interests and cooperation organization of ostschwedischen county councils and municipalities has, as members of the county of Örebro County, Södermanland County, Stockholm County, Uppsala County, Västmanland County and a total of 56 municipalities. In this sense, the Mälardalen is to be understood primarily as an extended Stockholm Capital Region.

Mark

Many typical " Swedish " mark as red wooden houses, are particularly common in this region. This region is also historically marked by the many castles and country estates in the vicinity of the capital Stockholm. In German-speaking countries the Mälardalen is the backdrop for both literary, eg Castle Gripsholm by Kurt Tucholsky, as dramatic, eg Inga Lindström melodramas, works known.

Dialect

The modern dialect, which is spoken in the Ostmälartal and near Stockholm, is often felt in other parts of Sweden as a kind of " high- Swedish ". In fact, however, the dialect from Westmälartal is clearly distinguishable from Stockholm dialect, but the dialects of the region belong to Sveamål, the svealändischen dialects.
