The Rufiyaa ( officially Maldives Rupee ) is the currency of the Maldives. It is divided into 100 Laari. Abbreviated as it is usually with Rf, MRf or Thaana letters ރ for R. The ISO 4217 code is MVR. It is tied with an average exchange rate of 1 USD = 12.85 MVR directly to the U.S. dollar, however, may vary in an exchange rate range of ± 20%, ie at least 10.28 MVR to a maximum of 15.42 MVR. Currently (March 4, 2012) is the official rate with 15.38 MVR per dollar barely established under its limit.

There are banknotes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 500 Rufiyaa in circulation. Coins are in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50 laari, 1 and 2 Rufiyaa.

The currency is used almost exclusively by the Maldivian people, for tourists, it is common to pay with U.S. dollars.
