Malek Bennabi

Malek Bennabi; Malik bin Nabi Malik bin Nabi; (Arabic مالك بن نبي ) (* 1905 in Constantine, † October 31, 1973 in Algiers ) is an Algerian intellectual and author. His spiritual body of work, which he developed over the years, includes a wealth of books and journals. Bennabi wrote mainly about spiritual renewal in Muslim society.

Life

Bennabi went to Paris in 1929, there to complete an engineering degree. After the occupation of France in World War II, he was forced by his unemployment, in the summer of 1942 to Germany and stayed until 1944. Afterwards he lived in Dreux, France, where he met his future wife. He worked briefly for the Vichy regime, which is why he was imprisoned by the local American invasion from August 1944 until the spring of 1945, together with his wife. He left France in 1956 and then returned in 1963 returned to Algeria, where he was director of an educational institution. The associated with this device service he resigned in 1967 to devote more time to his studies. In 1973, he died in Algiers and is buried in the cemetery of Sidi M'hamed.
