Malgobek

Malgobek (Russian Малгобек, Ingush МагӀалбике / Maghalbike ) is a city in the southern Russian republic of Ingushetia with 31 018 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is situated on the northern edge of the Greater Caucasus, immediately south of the mountains upstream Terek ridge about 40 km north of the Republic capital Magas.

Malgobek the Republic is under the administrative right and also the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

Nearest railway station is Mozdok in North Ossetia -Alania, about 35 kilometers by road north.

History

Malgobek was written in 1935 as a workers' settlement with the beginning of the development of oil deposits discovered here. Previously existed here already Chechen villages Malgobek - Balka and Chechens - Balka. The Ingush name stands for the title of Commander in Chief, which this area belonged in earlier times. Back in 1939, the place obtained its city charter.

During World War II Malgobek was occupied by German troops as part of Operation Edelweiss on 12 September 1942 and recaptured on January 3, 1943 by the Red Army.

During the 1990s, the population of the city doubled by refugees from embattled Chechnya. Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov rose several times its territorial claims on Malgobek Republic and the surrounding area.

Malgobek has a local history museum.

Economy

Besides oil production by Inguschneftegasprom which was negatively affected in recent years by its proximity to Chechnya, there are companies in the construction industry and the food industry.
