Malleus

The Hammer (Latin malleus ) is a small bone of the middle ear which connects the eardrum to the anvil (Latin incus ) and thus is part of the ossicles or the sound conducting apparatus. Embryonic created the hammer from the bottom of the first gill arch, comparative- anatomical articular from the original Os and is related to Meckel's cartilage.

Anatomically, the hammer from caput (head), cervix (neck), manubrium ( manubrium ) and two small appendages at the upper end of the manubrium, the processus mallei lateralis (lateral process of the malleus ) and the processus mallei anterior (front of the malleus ). The length of the entire ossicle varies from 7.6 to 9.1 mm, that of the manubrium from 4.3 to 5.7 mm. The mass of the hammer is about 25 mg. At the junction of the manubrium to the hammer neck the tendon of the tensor tympani is where. Except by the coalescence of the hammer to the tympanic membrane and the hinged connection with the anvil, the hammer by a top, front and side band ( ligament ) of the hammer head is held to the middle ear walls in position.

When otoscopy can be seen through the tympanic membrane the conjoined with him hammer grip with the lateral process of the malleus. At the top of the hammer handle the eardrum reached its deepest recovery ( Umbo membranae tympani, eardrum Abel ).
