History

In the 1960s, were looking for a new location for the existing airport since the 1920s in Bulltofta due to the increased volume of traffic and the associated noise of the city of Malmö. The first plans for an airfield at this site were published in 1964 and initially found little attention. Larger protests came in 1968-1969, when the first land was bought. The Wildlife Protection Society of Skåne realized at that time that one of the largest bird breeding areas in the region was in danger of being destroyed.

The actual construction of the airport began in 1970 and completed just before Christmas 1972. The cost was estimated at 75 million Swedish crowns, but in the end amounted to 133 million SEK. This sum was shared by the state and the city of Malmo, which made the most out of the new building. The new airport replaced the airfield in the Malmö district Bulltofta.

In 2006, the terminal was renovated while keeping the physical separation between the domestic and international passenger areas lifted so that the capacity could be increased.
