Malmö Opera and Music Theatre

The musical theater Malmö (Swedish: Malmö och opera Musikteater ), is a music and opera house in Malmö and one of the largest opera houses in Scandinavia. The building is located in central Malmö address Östra Rönneholmsvägen 20

Building

The theater was designed in 1933 by architect Sigurd Lewerentz, David Helldén and Erik Lallerstedt and inaugurated stadsteater than Malmö ( Malmö Municipal Theatre ) on September 25, 1944. As a counselor was asked, inter alia, Max Reinhardt and on his advice towards a large revolving stage was planned and an auditorium for 1500 people. The monumental building has clear formal language of functionalist features, combined with a suitable corresponding division of the building volume into several smaller buildings. Noteworthy is the marble -clad entrance façade with large windows. The lobby is decorated with works of art by Carl Milles and Isaac Grünewald. The building and the technical theater equipment were thoroughly renovated in 1973 and 2004 and improved the acoustics. Since 1994, the theater is a listed building.

Activity

In musical theater Malmo today operas, operettas and musicals, both rewritten Swedish works, as well as classic operas. In addition, topics concerts, gala evenings and guest performances can be arranged. All operas are listed, with few exceptions, in the original language. The goal is to professional directors, stage designers, singers and conductors in teamwork with the opportunity to unfold. It should be the center of the musical theater of the future.

The first theater director was the director Lars Rudolfsson, his first production was Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. 1952-1958 Ingmar Bergman was director of the theater. With the then little-known international actors, including Bibi Andersson, Harriet Andersson, Max von Sydow and Ingrid Thulin, he led to some important, historically notable, spoken theater productions.

In 1995, the premiere of the musical Kristina från Duvemåla by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson took place here.

In 1992, the City Theatre Malmö in Malmö was music och Teater AB reorganized and 1994 divided into the following companies: Malmo Dramatiska Teater AB (Malmö Dramatic Theatre ), Malmö Symphony Orchestra AB (Malmö Symphony Orchestra), Skåne Dansteater AB ( Skåne Dance Theatre ) and Malmö Musikteater AB ( Malmö Music Theatre). The current (2007) Director Göran K. Johansson and opera director Lars Tibell.
