Mamula (island)

Mamula (or Lastavica ) is a small Montenegrin island in the Adriatic Sea, in southwestern Montenegrin municipality of Herceg Novi.

Mamula is strategically located at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor between the Prevlaka and the Luštica Peninsula.

This small island is almost circular, with a diameter of about 200 meters and rises up to 16 meters above sea level. It is located about 3.4 miles from Herceg Novi away.

On the island there is a fort, which was built during the Austria -Hungarian rule of general Lazar Mamula in the mid- 19th century. During the Second World War, the fort of Italy was used as a prison since 30 May 1942. The prison was known for torture and atrocities which have suffered the prisoners.

Today, the state of the fort deteriorated progressively. However, the island is also again by boats, mainly from Herceg Novi from, visited, as it is a popular one-day destination and has some nice beaches.
