Manda Island

Manda is an island of the Lamu archipelago in the Indian Ocean off the northern coast of Kenya.

In the 9th century, primarily the ports of Takwa and the city Manda were known for their wealth. The island is reached by ferry from Lamu today and has its own airport. It is separated from the mainland by the narrow, long stretches only 40 to 80 meters wide Mkanda channel.

The island was abandoned in 1430. A gefunde during archaeological excavations Chinese coin from the reign of Zheng He occupied a trade route of the former residents with Asia in the early 15th century.
