Mandar people

Mandar ( Mandar Indonesian Suku ) are a people in the Indonesian province of West Sulawesi on the island of Sulawesi.

The Mandar language belongs to the Austronesian language family. It is closely related with the language Toraja Sa'dan. Mandar are mostly Muslims. Their settlement area is located further south along the coast between Mamuju, the capital of South Sulawesi, and Pare - Pare. Like the adjacent Makassar and Bugis in South Sulawesi Province, the Mandar have a long tradition as sailors, merchants and fishermen with their Sandeq called outrigger boats. The Sandeq are the pride of traditional Mandarkultur.
