Manerplaw

State

Manerplaw is a village on the moei river in Kayin State of Myanmar (formerly Burma).

Manerplaw is located less than 5 kilometers from the border with Thailand, opposite the Tha Song Yang district of Thailand's Tak Province and was intended as the capital of an independent Karen State Kawthoolei. There also the headquarters of the Karen National Union ( KNU ) was until January 1995 under their leader Bo Mya.

After a rebellion by Buddhist members of the KNU, the city was occupied by Burmese troops after heavy fighting in January 1995. In addition to the KNU Manerplaw also served other Burmese opposition groups as a secure base, for example, the All Burma Students' Democratic Front. The case of Manerplaw represents one of the worst setbacks of the Burmese opposition in the fight against the Burmese military regime State Peace and Development Council
