Manganese ( II) oxide is one of the oxides of manganese having the formula MnO.

Occurrence

Manganese oxide occurs naturally in the mineral Manganosit.

Production and representation

Manganese ( II) oxide by the reduction of manganese ( IV) oxide - containing ores, natural gas or charcoal is produced at temperatures between 400 to 1000 ° C. Formed of manganese ( II) oxide has to be cooled in an inert gas to avoid re-oxidation of tetravalent manganese.

Manganese ( II) oxide can also be by heating the manganese ( II) carbonate, MnCO3 are recovered under reduced pressure:

Properties

Physical Properties

Manganese ( II) oxide is an insulator antiferromagnetic and has a cubic NaCl -type crystal structure, which is distorted rhombohedral in direction due to the particular arrangement of the magnetic moments. Above the Néel temperature of 110 K manganese (II) oxide is paramagnetic.

Use

Manganese (II ) oxide is used as a component of mold powder in the metal processing industry, as a fertilizer additive and feed additive, as well as a green pigment when printing stuff.

Safety

Powdery, freshly prepared manganese (II ) oxide can ignite spontaneously in air.
