Manganese (III ) acetate is a salt of the trivalent manganese is used as a mild and selective oxidant. It belongs to the group of substances acetates.
Production and representation
Manganese (III ) acetate dihydrate can win by oxidation of manganese (II ) acetate, which is dissolved in glacial acetic acid and heated. As the oxidizing agent potassium permanganate is used here. Anhydrous manganese (III ) acetate can, however, by the reaction of manganese ( II) nitrate are obtained with acetic anhydride.
Properties
The anhydrous form is as analogous acetates of iron and chromium, a three Acetatpaare of bridged trinuclear complex with a central oxygen atom. It crystallizes as a linear coordination polymer, wherein an additional acetate acts as a bridge. The vacant coordination site on the third manganese atom is saturated by an acetic acid molecule. The chemical is therefore not a simple triacetate and is not represented by the frequently used simple formula " Mn ( OAc) 3" correctly. The crystal structure of the hydrated form is not yet clarified.
Use
Manganese (III ) acetate is used as:
- Mild and selective oxidizing agent,
- As a catalyst for allylic oxidation reactions for the production of alkenes,
- As a reagent for the oxidative production of radicals, for example, cyclization,
- As starting material for Acetoxylierungsreaktionen
