The hydropower plant Manic -1 (French Centrale Manic -1 ) is a storage power plant in the Canadian province of Québec. It is located in the Côte -Nord, about three kilometers west of Baie- Comeau and just before the mouth of the Rivière Manicouagan. Together with the neighboring hydroelectric plant McCormick it uses the Réservoir Manic 1 as a reservoir. The power plant has three Francis turbines, the installed capacity is 184 MW. Operators of the power plant is the state power company Hydro-Québec.

History

Between 1949 and 1956, the Manicouagan Power Company (MPC ) created a 126 MW power plant at the waterfalls of the river Rivière Manicouagan near its mouth. The energy demand rose steadily, even through the operation of grain elevators and an aluminum smelter in the area. The hydropower plant McCormick was powered by the 1959 finished Barrage McCormick, who regulated the water level. During the realization of the Manic - Outardes project it was recognized that hydropower at the river mouth could still be better utilized. At the request of Hydro-Québec, the MPC expanded the power of the power plant McCormick. In addition, built Hydro-Québec from 1964, the hydroelectric power station Manic -1 adjacent to the existing power plant and took it 1966/67, in operation.

The dam Barrage Manic - 1 consists of a concrete - middle part, which includes the powerhouse, as well as a dyke on each side. The western dike is 85 feet long, while the eastern dike, which connects to the Barrage McCormick, 110 meter measures. The spillway is a 610 meters long, 22 meters wide and 85 meters deep ditch. The drop height is 36.6 meters but may vary due to tidal 34-39 meters. The power plant Manic -1 was originally intended only for covering peak loads, the planned annual output amounted to 40 GWh.
