Manínska Gorge

The Manínska tiesňava ( German literally Manín Gorge ) is a approx. 0,8 km long narrow valley between the villages of Považska Teplá and Záskalie (district Považská Bystrica, Trenčín region ) in the north-western Slovakia.

The N.M. to about 380-390 m lying bottom of the gorge is occupied by the brook Manínsky creek, which here the Mesozoic limestone formations of the mountains Sulover ( Súľovské Hills ) between Velky Manín ( 891 m nm) and Maly Manín (813 m nm) intersects from the east. With a width of only a few meters at its narrowest point, the Manín Gorge is considered the narrowest canyon in Slovakia. For vehicles, this is only passable, since in the 1930s, the blowing up of a rock enabled the construction of a road.

Because of the occurrence of rare plant and animal species Manín the gorge was made in 1967 under nature protection. Today it is part of the Protected Landscape Area Strážovské hills and the nearby southeast of Záskalie Kostolecer gorge ( Kostolecká tiesňava ) connected by a trail. The use by the climbing is limited to two walls of rock in the middle area of the gorge.
