Manius Valerius Maximus Corvinus Messalla

Manius Valerius Maximus Corvinus Messala was a Roman Consul in 263 BC and censor 252 BC, during the First Punic War.

In his consulship he won together with his colleague Manius Otacilius Crassus a brilliant victory over the Carthaginians and Syracusans. The honor of the triumphant march, however, was granted to him alone. His help for Messana gave him the cognomen Messalla, which was performed in his family almost 800 years. To commemorate his victory, he was depicting it on the wall of the Curia Hostilia, the first example of a historic frescos in Rome.

In 252 BC he was censor Publius Sempronius Sophus along with. The censors ruled out the 16 senators from the Senate and degraded 400 knights because of their disobedience during the war in Sicily.

In addition, it is said to have brought the first sundial from Catania to Rome, where she was placed on a column in the Roman Forum.
