Additional products include cylinder head covers made of plastic with many integrated functions for the automotive industry, and filter elements for the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles. For general engineering, process engineering and industrial manufacturing sectors the product range includes industrial filters and membrane filters and equipment for water filtration. Around 90 percent of annual sales of around EUR 2.77 billion attributable to the activity in the automobile industry. The Company and its subsidiaries have more than 50 locations, including nine in Germany worldwide. Owner of the Mann Hummel Group are the families of the two founders.

History

Adolf Mann and Erich Hummel, Managing Director of the Stuttgart clothing manufacturer Bleyle acquired after the war-related adjustment of the Bleyle knitwear production, the filter systems division of the automotive supplier Mahle and took 1941 as a filter Mann Hummel GmbH with previous Bleyle employees the manufacture of textile and Filzluftfiltern for the vehicle industry. Among other things, air filters for the Maybach engines HL were 230 made , which were incorporated into the German Panzerkampfwagen type Panther and Tiger. After the war was a gradual expansion of production. So in 1954 a second plant in Ludwigsburg and the branch locations in Bösperde (1946) and in Marklkofen (1962 ) were established. In addition to air filters and oil filters are manufactured since 1958, which are also supplied mainly to the automotive industry. The company name is the "Filter Factory " in 2003 was attributable to the change of name to Mann Hummel GmbH.

From the late 1940s, Mann Hummel was under the name of man Pamina modes also in the textile industry worked before this business was sold in 1974 Schiesser. Further diversification of the filter manufacturing, there is, inter alia, since 1948 active in the machine is being made especially for the plastics industry business system technology.

From 1952 founded Mann Hummel Betriebskrankenkasse today acting as general statutory health insurance MHPLUS BKK emerged.

Conservation

The automotive industry is stepping up its efforts to combine mobility with environmental protection and economic efficiency. Automotive suppliers to make significant contributions - about 70 percent of an automobile come from their factories.

Environmental protection is a strategic corporate goal at Mann Hummel - fixed in the corporate guidelines and pari passu with economic objectives such as growth, profitability and market presence. Since early 2006, applies a uniform standard of environmental protection for the entire group. Environmental Commissioner and environmental management systems to support and document the implementation of the Group- wide standards. As early as 1998 led Sonnenberg be the first site an environmental management system. Currently, 24 plants worldwide are certified according to the environmental standard ISO 14001. The certification of the recent works carried out successively.

In addition to the environmentally friendly production is increasingly on the environmental impact of the products themselves in focus. Plastic materials from recycling - so-called " recompounded Plastic Materials " - can reduce the environmental impact significantly. Mann Hummel, for example, has developed a cylinder head cover from such recompounded Plastic material and introduced into the series. The material consists of polyamide fibers which arise as a committee and overproduction in carpet manufacturing.

Engineering plastics are increasingly replacing the hitherto predominant material in the engine compartment metal and thus reduce the vehicle weight. Lighter vehicles have lower fuel consumption. Less fuel means less emissions.

Plastic offers weight advantages but also new possibilities for the design of components and thus a higher degree of functional integration. This reduces typically the material consumption. An example of this is at the IAA in 2007, the prototype of a plastic oil pan for passenger cars Compared with hybrid components made of aluminum and plastic saves the product around 30 percent lighter, compared with pure aluminum components of the weight advantage is as high as around 60 percent.

Research and Development

Mann Hummel has about 800 employees in research and development. About four percent of the total annual sales is invested in these areas. Around 3,000 patents or patent applications, document the high value. Besides purely technological factors play in the research and development and societal trends as well as ecological and economic parameters play a role. To evaluate these factors, commissioned Mann Hummel regularly studies with external partners, such as the Max Planck and Fraunhofer Institutes.

Also in terms of biofuels, the company conducts research for new solutions: In special test laboratories the Mann Hummel experts examine about their long-term behavior, so as to optimize the material for filter materials and components for the biofuels used worldwide resistant.

The company is expanding air filter for electric and hybrid vehicles for air-cooled batteries. The Group also systems that regulate the pressure and humidity inside the lithium -ion battery and protect the batteries developed.

The water transfer applications, the developers their knowledge of the simulation of the flow geometry of fuels and oil on water. The experience in the processing of high-quality plastics play an important role in water filtration. Mann Hummel develops and manufactures in terms of water filtration plastic membranes and systems for very different needs: ultrafiltration, membrane bio - reactors, reverse osmosis. Target applications include water treatment in remote rural communities, departments and residential complexes, mining, oil and gas industry, electric power plants, semiconductor manufacturing facilities, in the chemical processing industry and others.
