Manuel Jimenes

Manuel Jiménez ( Jimenes ) González ( * 1808 in Bayamo, Cuba, † 1854 in Haiti) was a Dominican politician and president of the Dominican Republic.

Biography

During the presidency of President Pedro Santana, he was promoted to general in 1844 and was a member of the Cabinet from 1844 to 1848 as Minister of War and Marine. Following the resignation of President Santana on 4 August 1848 for health reasons, first took over a council of state secretaries, which also Jiménez González belonged, as the provisional presidency.

On September 4, 1848, he was finally then as the successor of Santana president of the Dominican Republic. During his tenure, many exiled previous members of the independence movement La Trinitaria returned. Due to its fears of an invasion of Haitian troops during the reign of Faustin Soulouque he tried to strengthen the discipline of the Dominican Army.

On 29 May 1849 he was, however, deposed by Santana after a coup, so this re- assumed the presidency. Then he himself went into exile to Haiti, where he later died.
