Manx Electric Railway

The Manx Electric Railway is an electric tram on the Isle of Man.

It was founded in 1893 and connects on the east coast of the Isle of Man Ramsey with the location of the capital Douglas. The route is 17 miles long and has a gauge of three feet (914 mm).

It is the oldest vintage narrow-gauge railway in the British Isles with the oldest still operational tram vehicles in the world.

History

The first section of the end of the promenade in Douglas to the station Groudle Glan Railway was opened in 1893, the sequel reached Laxey 1894. 5 years long this route was reached in operation until 1899, the current endpoint Ramsey along the cliffs to the east of the island. The beginning and the supplying electric power station built Douglas Bay Estates Ltd. , 1894 took over the Douglas & Laxey Electric Tramway Co. Ltd.. which in the same year as the Isle of Man Tramways & Electric Power Co. Ltd.. ( I.o.M.T. &. E. P. ) renamed. 1900 had the I.o.M.T. &. E. P. go into liquidation because of the failure of their bank and was sent to the newly founded Manx Electric Railway Co. Ltd.. sold, which took over the business in 1902. In the late 1950s, the Manx Electric Railway Co. Ltd. fell. themselves in financial distress and in 1957 took over the island's government the web. It created a common management together with the Snaefell Mountain Railway, which still exists today, it was called Manx Electric Railway Board and today Isle Of Man Passenger Transport Board. The web is now marketed together with the horse-drawn tram and Douglas Steam Railway Isle of Man Railway Isle of Man as a Heritage Railways. Behind this concept is the Department of Tourism and Leisure of the Island Council, which also offers the buses of the island under the name of Bus Vannin.
