Maple Ridge, British Columbia

Maple Ridge is a District Municipality (English district municipality ) in the southwest of the Canadian province of British Columbia. It is located east of Vancouver, between the Fraser River to the south and the Pitt Lake to the north. West of the village is located Pitt Meadows. Maple Ridge belongs to the district of Metro Vancouver.

History

The official founding of Maple Ridge took place on September 12, 1874, it is the fifth oldest municipality in British Columbia, New Westminster, Victoria, Langley and Chilliwack.

Since the mid- 1980s Maple Ridge recorded above-average population growth, alone between 1996 and 2001 no less than 12.5 %. In 1995, the community withdrew from the more rural Fraser Valley Regional District and moved to urban Metro Vancouver. Based on the 2010 Winter Olympics, which took place in the nearby city of Vancouver, the population growth of the small provincial town also held in the first decade of the 21st century to continue. This is also reflected in higher land prices.

Demography

The census in 2011 showed a population of 76 055 inhabitants for the community. The population has thereby increased since the census of 2006 at 10.3%, while the population in British Columbia grew simultaneously only by 7.0%.

Economy

The early settlers of Maple Ridge operated forestry and agriculture. Even today include forest enterprises the most important employers. Agriculture is dominated by berry plantations, nurseries and horse breeding. About two-thirds of all workers commute to Vancouver and in other suburbs.
