Maradi (Region)

The Maradi region is one of the seven regions of Niger and is located in the south of the country. Its capital is Maradi. The region has 3,404,645 inhabitants ( 2012).

Geography

Maradi is bordered to the west by the Tahoua region, to the north by the region of Agadez, Zinder Region to the east and to the south by the Nigerian states of Katsina, Sokoto and Zamfara. In geological terms, the region is attributable to the Mesozoic era.

History

The Maradi region dates back as an administrative unit in 1964 created the department of Tahoua. From 1976 to 1979, the future president Tandja Mamadou was prefect of the department. 1998 Maradi was converted as all previous Nigerien departments in a region. The region was affected by the hunger crisis in Niger during the years 2004-06.

Population

In Maradi most Hausa live in comparison to the other parts of Niger and pay proportionately. This people group includes 88% of the total population of the region. Other ethnic groups in Maradi are the Fulani and Tuareg 8% to 3%.

Economy and infrastructure

The southernmost part of the Maradi region is also called the " breadbasket of Niger "; here tobacco, peanuts, wheat, soybeans and cotton are grown as well as the staple food of the country, millet and cowpea.

In the Maradi region, there are 2349 primary schools, of which 31 are private schools. The gross enrollment rate was in the school year 2009/2010 75.3 % ( nationwide 72.9 % ) in girls 62.4 % ( nationwide 63.9 %). At a primary school teacher average of 45 students ( 39 nationwide ) came. The primary school completion rate was 50.3 % ( nationwide 49.3 % ) in girls 41.5 % ( nationwide 41.5 % also ).

Subdivision

The Maradi region is divided into eight departments Aguie, Bermo, Dakoro, Gazaoua, guidan Roumdji, Madarounfa, Mayahi and Tessaoua.
